South African National Survey of Research and Experimental Development
Produced by the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) on behalf of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)

The National Survey of Research and Experimental Development (R&D Survey), which forms a part of the National Statistics System, is published annually by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in partnership with Statistics South Africa and in alignment with the Statistics Act (No. 6 of 1999).

South Africa’s R&D statistics are key to and informing the government's implementation of the national Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) policy. These statistics are increasingly useful as a source of evidence for the private sector, the international community, the media, and researchers, as well as for policy actors across government departments.

The R&D Survey is conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council’s Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) in accordance with the international guidelines published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), known as the Frascati Manual. The resulting statistics provide important evidence on the size, growth, and composition of R&D expenditures and human resources devoted to R&D.
